the relation of shock index (si) and revised trauma score (rts) with trauma patients mortality after first 24 hours of admission at khatam-al anbia hospital in iranshahr heydarikhayat n[1], rezaee hematabadi ma[2], rasouli d[3], kalbali a[4] received: 11 ay , 2012 accepted: 5aug, 2012abstract background & aims: trauma is one of the most important health problems and a leading cause of death in 4th decade of life. mortality due to accidents has a critical situation in iran and the mortality rate is increasing10-15% annually. the purpose of this study was assessing the relation of shock index and revised trauma score with trauma patient’s mortality after first 24 hours of admission at khatam-al anbia hospital in iranshahr.materials & methods: prospective design was used on 240 traumatic patients to predict mortality of trauma patients after 24 hours of hospitalization at khatam-alanbia hospital in iranshahr. descriptive statistics χ2 test and logistic regression was used for data analysis.result: 86/6% of trauma was due to accidents and falling. 38/3% experienced multi trauma. 2/1% expired during 24 hours of admission. the minimum and maximum sores and mean of si were 0/31, 1/59 and 0/71 respectively. also the minimum and maximum sores and mean of rts were 7. 12 and 11/66 respectively. there was a significant relationship between si and rts with mortality of trauma patients by both x2 and logistic regression (p=0/000).conclusion: the si and trs is a useful instrument for mortality predicating. to reduce errors in mortality prediction, it’s better to use them along with other kinds of triage instruments. key words: trauma, si (shock index), rts (revised trauma score), mortality address: faculty of nursing & midwifery iranshahr, zahedan university of medical sciences, zahedan, iran. tel: (+98)9187362361email: [email protected][1] senior lecturer in medical-surgical nursing, school of nursing and midwifery of iranshahr , zahedan university of medical sciences and health services, iran. The First 24 Hours after Severe Head Trauma
Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined by a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 8 or less during the first post-trauma day. It is recognized as a devastating pathology in terms of mortality and morbidity. Long-term recovery is poor with only 10 to 20 % patients returning to work after 1 year [1, 2]. If all severe TBI patients are taken into account (including those deceased before arrival...
